When former High Times editor Kyle Kushman contracted strawberry cough in 2000, he chalked it up to a strange coincidence. Kushman claims he bought a little clone from another grower. It is said that this clone was grown in Connecticut not far from a strawberry field. Attracted by the clone’s pungent strawberry aroma, Kushman eventually crossed it with a Haze plant and given the resulting strain the name Strawberry Field. The result of all this breeding is Strawberry Cough, a strain with a sweet, mellow taste and a mostly cerebral impact. Kushman made a big deal out of Strawberry Cough’s in New York City’s unlicensed cannabis industry. His next stop was California, where he would devote his time to farming. Strawberry Cough’s popularity skyrocketed as he distributed clones of the strain on his cross-country journey.

This variety’s large, heavy flowers have earned it a slew of honors. Strawberry Cough is predominately a sativa strain, although it has an indica-like bud structure with its compact and rigid leaves. However, because of the presence of sativa genes, the buds take on a tapered, conical shape, looking less like popcorn and more like little pinecones.

Because the blossoms are covered in foggy amber trichomes, the leaves appear slightly yellow. The flower’s pistils are woven scarlet through the sticky leaves instead of orange. There is a faint strawberry scent emanating from the blooms, which mixes with a tinge of peppery spice. The smoke produced by burning the buds is evocative of the aroma of the original Haze strain. Many users complain that this strain’s smoke is too strong, giving them a coughing fit and even bringing on tears at times.
